Jessica began riding as child in Ireland. Her father George was a successful amateur jockey and he and her mother Rosemary encouraged her to get into the sport. She met her husband Eckhard at the Dublin Horse Show in Ireland in 1994, and moved to Germany shortly afterwards. After an eight year partnership, Jessica parted ways with owner Lady Georgina Forbes in 2011. In January 2012, the couple relocated to Paris, where she began working at the stables of Edouard de Rothschild. Just two weeks after the move to France, and over a year since her last major victory, she won the four-star Amsterdam Grand Prix in the Netherlands. Kurten went on to ride for Paul Bücheler for a short time during 2014.
