Alberto became riding aged five and began competing at age eight. Both his parents rode, his mother show jumping and his father competing in a Mexican discipline called charros - a type of rodeo riding. Alberto's mother thought that show jumping was a safer option for her son than following in his father's footsteps.

At nine, Alberto was junior National Champion and claimed medals in his age classes every year through junior ranks. In 1996, Alberto won a Gold Medal in the North American Young Rider Championship. 

Alberto coninued to combine riding with his studies and completed a degree in International Business before landing a job in the textile industry. He continued to show jump as a hobby and in 2006 Alberto qualified for his first FEI World Cup Final and represented Mexico in the World Championships in Aachen the same year. I

n 2008 Alberto began a very successful association with Alfonso Romo of La Silla fame, which led to his future very successful partnership with Rosalia La Silla. Alberto turned professional in 2011 and moved to Europe to pursue his new career. The following year he finished 5th individually in the 2012 Olympic Games.
