The Longines Global Champions Tour and Global Champions League of Monaco brought out the stars from the world of business, sport and entertainment.
It was a dramatic spectacle in the most famous yacht harbour in the world, as the best riders descended upon Port Hercule, under the Prince’s Palace, for world class sport and one of the highlights of the Principalities social calendar.
Jennifer Gates, who was competing in the top level competitions and for her GCL team the Paris Panthers, was joined by her parents Bill and Melinda Gates every day of the event, as the family enjoyed the special atmosphere and phenomenal show jumping. And for the final of the GCL Jennifer’s father sported her team’s Paris Panthers polo shirt.
Speaking about the weekend, Jennifer said: “I’m excited to be part of the Global Champions League along with my team, the Paris Panthers. This circuit is truly world-class, and we’ve all been having a lot of fun being part of GCL and competing in new cities throughout the season. This show was a special one with my parents in the audience cheering me on.”
They weren’t the only famous faces watching their offspring in the stunning setting for the global circuit, where the jumping is just metres from some of the world’s mega-yachts moored at edge of the arena, next to the Formula 1 pit lane. “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen and his wife Patti, supported daughter Jessica, as she secured third place in the opening LGCT class, and delivered a stunning round to help her team, Shanghai Swans, finish second in this leg of the Championship.
Princess Caroline of Hannover also watched from a ring-side seat, as her daughter Charlotte Casiraghi competed in the final event of the day.
Charlotte said: "I am very proud to have this event in my home town. Monaco was one of the first shows to be part of the Global Tour. Having horses so close to the sea in the middle of the city, in the exact same place as the Formula 1 track, is something very spectacular.”
Sporting stars were also out in force, as two-time F1 World Champion Mika Häkkinen joined guests in the hospitality lounge, along with Australian Champion jockey Michelle Payne. From the world of entertainment, Mission Impossible and Seven Years in Tibet actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite, also a Longines Ambassador of Elegance, praised the “beautiful” event in it’s unique setting.
With the competitions over, the riders exchanged their jodhpurs for glamorous cocktail attire and joined VIPs for the de rigueur chilled glass of rosé, before heading to a party on one of the mega- yachts, appropriately named ‘Global’.
