Day one of the four day festival of show jumping Longines Global Champions Tour of Valkenswaard kicks off today with an all-star equine line up ready to take to the stunning grass arena at the Tops International Arena. Heralded as the epicentre of equestrianism in Europe, the spiritual home of the Tour in The Netherlands hosts no less than 23 Rio Olympic confirmed riders, all of whom will fly imminently to Brazil following this weekend’s CSI5* competition. Many of their top horses will also be in action this weekend,

Current LGCT Ranking leader Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) will compete her stunning mare, Caretina de Joter, one of her two top horses. Hot on her heels and keen to regain the overall ranking lead Christian Ahlmann (GER) has brought with him the big guns of his stallions Codex One and Cornado II, while compatriot Ludger Beerbaum (GER) will compete with his LGCT Grand Prix of Chantilly winning horse Chiara. Third place man Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE) brings his formidable duo of Casall ASK and Clarimo ASK, with the former winning the LGCT Grand Prix of Paris just last month. Another legend of the sport will be John Whitaker (GBR) and his famous stallion Argento, both of whom will head to the grass arena for Saturday’s competition.

Also in action will be local hero Harrie Smolders (NED) who will bring one of his top stallions Don VHP Z to his home turf, as well as Aiyetoro. Fellow Dutch rider Maikel van der Vleuten (NED) will compete with two of his top horses, VDL Groep Quatro and VDL Groep Arera C, while top Belgian rider Gregory Wathelet (BEL) rides his string of top horses, Citizenguard Taalex, Oh d’Eole and Indorado van ' T Heike. German rider Marcus Ehning (GER) will be back in action on the Tour and has two of his top horses in Valkenswaard; Gin Chin van het Lindenhof and Cristy, while Bertram Allen (IRL) will compete with his stunning grey mare Molly Malone V, plus ride the expressive up and coming 9 year old Hector van d’Abdijhoeve.

Last year’s LGCT Grand Prix of Valkenswaard winning combination of Marco Kutscher (GER) and Van Gogh will also return to the centre stage for the 12th leg of the Tour, looking for a repeat of their sensational win this time last year. Kent Farrington (USA) will compete with Creedance and Gazelle, both Grand Prix winning horses, and Scott Brash (GBR) will bring back Hello M’Lady to her first competition after a few months’ break, as well as his young LGCT Grand Prix winning horse Hello Forever.
