It was a Belgian first and second place in this morning’s CSI5* 1.45m speed class, with Gregory Wathelet riding Papillon taking the win and an on-form Constant van Paesschen with Citizenguard Million Dreams taking 2nd place, ahead of Britain’s Michael Whitaker and Valentin R in third.
Constant van Paesschen led for much of the class, setting a speedy time from the middle of the draw. Gregory Wathelet, one of the last riders to go, shaved 0.5s off van Paesschen’s time with a beautiful round. “I am really pleased,” said Gregory. “I am looking forward to the Grand Prix later and I will do my best in front of the home crowd.”
This evening’s feature class will include nearly all of the world’s Top 30 riders. World No 2 Ben Maher (GBR) has already stated there are too many great riders here to predict the winner of the Longines Global Champions Tour of Antwerp Grand Prix: “There are 25-30 riders here that could easily win,” said Ben. “It will be exciting.”
